Ok, so after Hannah Pearson tries to call out Ashley Borders for stripping down to a see-through one piece of lingerie while on the golf course with Hannah’s boyfriend Louie and another male, Daniel, it quickly turns into Ashley utilizing what appears to be genuine pain to ignore considering where Hannah is coming from.
Ashley immediately gets tears in her eyes and confesses to Hannah that due to what some man high up at the church she went thought of her clothing (too “slutty”) she was told she couldn’t attend youth group at church, and after her mother stuck-up for her her family was pushed out of the church.
(Hannah Pearson)
This story is interesting and gives me insight into why Ashley might be so rebellious.
BUT…the part that frustrated me is Ashley feels the need to defend her clothing style at the time she was considering too risque for church by saying, “I didn’t even dress slutty”. This is so offensive, because even though Ashley hates getting judged by women like Hannah (and others since Ashley also confesses women are always hating on her) she still believes there is a standard that crosses the line into slutty, as if a slut is a real type of person rather than a label used to try to punish someone for acting outside of acceptable social boundaries.
Ashley, if you don’t like getting judged unfairly as a whore, stop talking like there is a woman out there who deserves to be judged as a whore! No one is a whore. All people are doing different things, sexually as well as in many other areas, and no one is some gross trashy slut. That is a sexist perspective in my opinion.
So Ashley if you want Hannah to stop with her complaints and listen to where you’re coming from, don’t do the same thing as Hannah and discuss some imaginary line of what clothing is acceptable that women shouldn’t cross. There is no real, legitimate slutty. It’s just an oppressive creation (that has very real consequences for women also and I don’t want to undermine that).
Hannah was being uptight. It’s your boyfriend’s job to respect you, not Ashley’s. Still Ashley almost defended her case perfectly, except for the “I didn’t even dress slutty” comment.
